First Catholic Church in Arabic Country To Be Dedicated to Mary

E-mail
Doha - The first Catholic Church in an Arab Muslim emirate will be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, during a ceremony that will be celebrated by Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On March 14, Cardinal Dias will officiate at the ceremony in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The Apostolic Vicar of Arabia, Archbishop Paul Hinder, will join the cardinal for the dedication of the new church.

The church was built on land donated by Emir Amir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who in recent years has become a supporter of inter-religious dialogue, despite keeping Islamic law in place which forbids Muslims to convert to other religions. Qatar, which has 800,000 inhabitants, established diplomatic relations with the Holy See in 2003. The pastor of the new parish will be a priest from the Philippines, Father Tomasito Veneracion.

The Easter celebration is a celebration of Triumph

The Easter celebration is a celebration of triumph, a golden triumph, not only over death and sin but also over despair. The followers of Jesus resembled a scattered community after His passion and death. They wandered without a shepherd. But the resurrection of Jesus empowered them to overcome their despair. The main fruit of Christ’s resurrection is that of consolation and hope. Each one of us can receive consolation and hope because of that empty tomb. We may fear death but we are not terrorized by it. Because of Christ’s resurrection, death was changed from being ultimate to being merely transitional. St. Paul wrote, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting?"

Kerala's love affair with alcohol

People in the southern state of Kerala are the heaviest drinkers in India, and sales of alcohol are rising fast. The BBC's Soutik Biswas examines why.

Jacob Varghese says he began drinking when he was nine years old, sipping on his father's unfinished whisky and brandy in glass tumblers. It's a terrifying story of a descent into alcoholism for this 40-year-old health inspector. At school, he consumed cheap local liquor. He lived in a haze of alcohol through his teens and dropped out of college. He lost a job, cut his wrists twice trying to end his life, landed up in rehabilitation centres and at the age of 32, was reduced to begging on the streets to fund his alcohol habit.

Canonisation of Blessed Alphonsa Important Mile Stone Crossed

E-mail
On Friday, 1 June 2007 His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree approving the miracle that took place through the intercession of Blessed Alphonsa, thus paving the way for her canonization. Jinil Shaji, the second son of Mr. Shaji and Mrs. Lissy, Ozhuthottiyil from Kuruppumthara was healed of the deformity of his left leg which was by birth twisted and bent inwards and paralyzed. A team of medical experts had certified that the healing was unexplainable by medical sciences and could have taken place only with a divine intervention. The approval of this miracle by the Pope clears the way for the canonization.

Spiritual Warfare

By the “occult,” we are speaking of some supra-human or supernatural influence that is not from God.

We commonly associate the occult with that which has demonic influence. Today the occult has become much more popular than it was twenty five years ago. Today, there is popular Satanic music, Satanic street gangs, an increase in Satanic worship, a more widespread use of the horoscope and study of the signs of the zodiac, and Satanic games that can be purchased. In spite of this, many people do not take the occult seriously. They laugh off the notion of the Power of Evil as actually being a part of the “real” world in which we live.

Are You Hungry For God?

A heart that genuinely yearns for the lord will be blessed with his glorious presence.

In John.6:26-27, Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell  you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw signs,  but because you ate your fill of the loaves. v27: do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

2000 years ago, when the Son of God walked on the face of this earth, multitudes gathered to hear His teachings and to get healed and delivered from all the demonic oppressions. But they were not satisfied with the signs and wonders. They were satisfied only after Jesus gave them the bread and fish to eat. They came in search of Him and asked Him to give the bread again.

Throughout the generations the mindset of people did not change. They want to eat and drink without any hardship. Today also in so many families we hear of people who are idle. To those people who came to Jesus and asked Him for bread Jesus replied do not work for the food that perishes.

Today also people go to church and retreat centers when they are faced with difficulties in life but they forget the Lord after their needs are met. But the Creator of heaven and earth is looking for people who are hungry for Him. In Jn.6:51, Jesus said, I Am the Living Bread that came down from Heaven. Whoever eats of this Bread will live forever; and the Bread that I will give for the life of world is My flesh. When people heard it there was a dispute among them and many walked away from Him.
